saving for college

Have you put off saving for college? You are not alone. Every day, hundreds of thousands of parents come to the realization that they may have waited a little too long to get started on college costs and preparation.  It is never too late to start thinking about the future. Thanks to Upromise by Sallie Mae, saving for your child’s future is easier than ever, helping parents to earn money towards college by simply doing the one million and one things that they already do. From online shopping sprees to everyday necessities, here are 3 reasons that Upromise makes saving for college as easy as 123.

How does Upromise By Sallie Mae work?

Upromise is a program that helps families boost their 529 or college savings plan or pay down student loans by earning cash back on qualified, everyday spending. The basic idea is that if you’re going to be shopping anyway, you may as well choose to make purchases from a Upromise partner and start accruing money for your kids’ college education.

To get started, head to Upromise.com and sign up. Make sure to register your grocery and drugstore loyalty cards as well as your credit and debit cards so that your account will get credited when you buy eligible products, meals, or services from their partners. The next time you need to shop, simply go to Upromise.com and search for that store. Members can earn a percentage in cash back for college on the purchases they make at over 850 online retailers.

The first way to earn cash with Upromise is through their online shopping portal. Upromise.com, much like travel rewards malls, credit card issuer rewards malls, or independent cash back websites, has partnerships to offer savings with hundreds of different retailers.

Another way to earn cash is by dining at restaurants or shopping at certain local stores. For instance, you can register a debit or credit card with Upromise, then go out to eat at participating restaurants.

You can really maximize your earnings with the Upromise MasterCard.

This is a credit card with cash back benefits where you can earn up to 10% back when you shop or dine! You will typically get up to 5% cash back for being a Upromise member, plus an additional 5% cash back when you use the Upromise MasterCard at the Upromise shopping portal and through the dining rewards program. There is no limit to the total cash back you can earn on eligible purchases. Sign up for the Upromise MasterCard today and earn a $25 Cash Back Bonus after your first use of the card. To be eligible, the purchase must be made within 90 days of opening the account.

Finally, you can earn money for college with grocery coupons. You register your grocery or drugstore card with Upromise, download coupons from Upromise.com, then scan your grocery card at checkout like normal.

How can you redeem your Upromise earnings?

There are 4 main ways to redeem Upromise earnings. The first is with a Upromise GoalSaver savings account from Sallie Mae. Your Upromise account savings will automatically transfer into this account every month if you link the two accounts, and on top of that you can be eligible to earn a 10% annual match on your Upromise earnings that you transfer into to this account.

The next savings plan is a 529 college savings account. Specifically designed for long-term college savings, these accounts can have federal and state tax benefits. If you set up an eligible Ascensus College Savings-administered 529 plan, you can get your Upromise earnings deposited automatically into your 529.

You can also redeem your money to pay down an eligible student loan.

The fourth and final way to redeem Upromise earnings is with a standard check. You can request to have a check mailed to you for Upromise earnings of $10 or more once a month.
